House Homeland Security Subcommittee on Oversight and Management Efficiency Hearing; "Unmanned Aerial System Threats: Exploring Security Implications and Mitigation Technologies."; Testimony by Todd Humphreys, Assistant Professor, Cockrell School of Engineering, The University of Texas at Austin
March 18, 2015
The nearly 100,000 football fans gathered in Texas Memorial Stadium last August to watch the Longhorn football season opener had trouble concentrating on the game. Hovering above the stadium was an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV), a drone, with blue and red blinking lights. The University of Texas Police watched helplessly as the UAV shifted from one area of the stadium to another. When the UAV's operator finally recalled the device and landed it at his feet in a nearby parking lot, the police immediately took both UAV and operator into custody. The situation turned out to be no more menacing than a devoted but ticketless UT football fan trying to watch the game through the video feed on his drone. But the police could not have known this beforehand, and so had to treat the incident as a potential chemical, biological, or explosive attack on the multitude of gathered spectators.

Heavy snow that accumulated on an outdoor gas meter caused the gas supply line to break, said Tim Nangle, fire department spokesman. The meter was located in a narrow space between two buildings into which a large pile of snow had fallen, burying the meter. The department was notified about 12:30 p.m. of the possible gas leak at 141 Congress St. After confirming the high readings, firefighters evacuated that building and the nearby Hilltop Superette.
