GT Solar on its large-ingot growth system

By Debra Vogler, senior technical editor

February 3, 2011 -- Prior to Photonics West (January 22-27, 2011, in San Francisco), GT Solar released its latest multi-crystalline ingot growth system -- the DSS650 -- for ingots >600kg used in solar photovoltaics (PV) applications. In a podcast interview, Jeffrey Nestel-Patt, director of marketing and communications at GT Solar, discusses the redesign strategy to scale the company’s ingot growth system.

Changes to the company’s proprietary hot-zone technology enabled the use of a larger crucible to fit within the same process chamber used in prior tool generations. Because the chamber of the furnace can accommodate larger size crucibles, the available space in the hot zone is optimized.
