March 10, 2011 – As the solar cell manufacturing process evolves, makers are looking for ways to quantify the photovoltaic (PV) cell surface. Dr. Erik Novak from Bruker, presenter from the PV manufacturing sessions, Renewable Energy World/Photovoltaics World Conference & Expo, this week in Tampa, FL, explains that PV cell surface quantification helps us understand where the cell’s final efficiency will be.
3D surface characterization can provide in-line or near-line process monitoring. Surface density and "skewness" correlate to how well a surface traps light. This was the topic of Novak’s conference presentation.
Regarding the other PV manufacturing presentations he’s heard at the Photovoltaics World Conference, Novak lists reel-to-reel processing and increasing efficiency, as well as standardization in the PV fab process, as hot topics.
