Manufacturing Environment, Automation, and Final Assembly Products

(November 20, 2009) — The following products help manufacturers assemble quality products at high yields, preventing contamination, ESD shock, defects caused by vibration, and other problems. Robotic tooling for increased automation in assembly are also included.

Assembly Floor Environment Products
Hepa Filter Cabinets

The McDry MCU-401 Hepa Filter model suits storage of precision measuring instruments, electronic components, or other materials that require a cleanroom and low humidity environment. The MCU-401 Hepa Filter model meets cleanroom “Class 1000” specifications. Using a fan circulation system, dry air passes through the hepa filter and is circulated throughout the cabinet and back down into the drying unit. The cabinet keeps the relative humidity inside the cabinet below 10%, and can hold up to 50 kg (approximately 110 lb). The system is equipped with a digital meter that displays the RH level at all times. The MCU-401 Hepa Filter model also features adjustable stainless shelves and is equipped with a high resistance ground terminal. Seika Machinery Inc., www.seikausa.com.

Floor Vibration Cancellation Products

STACIS active piezoelectric vibration cancellation system achieves efficient vibration isolation using piezoelectric actuators and a stiff suspension. It enables older and less-than-optimal floors to accommodate state-of-the-art tools. The STACIS SEM-Base floor platform suits scanning electron microscopes (SEMs). It incorporates STACIS technology but has a much smaller footprint and installs easily with minimal tuning. STACIS SEM-Base is compatible with all internal SEM vibration isolation systems. STACIS STAGE-Base frame-mountable, extended stroke active piezoelectric vibration cancellation system features sub-Hz vibration cancellation in an active hard-mount floor platform that fits most commercial SEMs. SEMs are among the most vibration sensitive tools made, and these precision instruments typically incorporate an internal vibration isolation system. STACIS STAGE-Base is designed to be integrated into advanced, high-throughput lithography and metrology tools. The STACIS technology is capable of extremely fast settling of the isolated payload in response to motorized, stage-induced motion, resulting in increased tool throughput. Low-humidity Cabinet Audit Tool

XDry M.O.L.E. is a process audit tool for ultra-low humidity desiccant dry cabinets, based on the V-M.O.L.E. from ECD. It records and reports internal temperature and humidity inside a dry cabinet. While the internal control system provides moisture control, the independent auditing system can provide proof of actual conditions. XDry M.O.L.E. adapts an industry-standard temperature profiling system to include moisture measurements. XDry M.O.L.E. comes standard with one moisture and one temperature sensor, with an optional second moisture sensor. The system provides detailed reporting on the interior conditions of the desiccant dry cabinet. Sensor accuracy is within 1% RH and ±1°C. Data recording frequency is adjustable by the end user allowing data to be captured for up to 12 months. ECD, www.ecd.com and XDry, www.XDry.com

ESD Clothing
Foot Grounders

The HG6000 series foot grounders provide a complete path to-ground with protection at the heel and toe of the shoe. Foot grounders assure electrical contact with the floor as users shift their weight from heel to toe, temporarily isolating one foot from ground. They are available sized in S, M, and L. Sole grounders provide rapid and complete static dissipation due to constant contact through entire walking motion. Wearing the conductive ribbon inside the shoe or sock ensures proper electrical contact with the user. A rugged 1 m? buried resistor is standard (2 meg also in stock). All ESD footwear is worn on both feet to provide consistent grounding while in motion. The grounder meets or exceeds requirements of ANSI ESDS20.20. ESD Jackets

The JK Series 8812 ESD jackets feature a proprietary hip-to-cuff feature for hands-free grounding. The garments are fabricated from lightweight 88% polyester and 12% carbon fabric. Panel to panel continuity is reliable, with consistent continuity readings for up to 100 wash cycles. The jacket conforms to ANSI/ESD 20.20. It shields ESD-susceptible items from charges on workers' clothing. Transforming Technologies, http://www.transforming-technologies.com/documents/JKSeriesDS082609_000.pdf

Robotics
Heavy Duty Modular Tool Changers

The SmartChange tool changers use a new coupling mechanism and six-cam locking design. The family consists of four models that match all current robots’ bolt patterns from 125 mm. With no adapter plates and the strength of the 6 cam coupling mechanism there is no need to review the load capabilities of the tool changer versus the robot. Simply select the model that corresponds to your robot’s bolt pattern. The SmartChange family is designed to exceed the e-stop moment loads of all the robots currently on the market. Ease of programming is enhanced by eliminating locating pins in the SmartChange design. The SmartChange family consists of the SC125, SC160, SC200 and SC250 models, all with moment load capabilities that exceed the e-stop moment loads of every robot currently available with respective faceplate mounting configurations of 125mm, 160mm, 200mm, and 250mm. The tool changers incorporate high-strength steel alloys and feature a compact footprint that accommodates high load carrying capability and high dynamic loads. Flexible utility mounting positions provide easy integration. Dovetail mounting features with single self-retained fasteners allow for quick, secure, and repeatable attachment of modules. High-speed Pick and Place Robot

The Adept Quattro Robot is capable of going faster than 300 cycles per minute. The 25 × 300 × 25 mm standard cycle was used. Advantages include faster cycles and settling times as well as increased payload and more consistent performance throughout the workspace. The Adept Quattro s650H is a parallel robot specifically designed for high-speed manufacturing, packaging, material handling, and assembly applications. It features a four-arm kinematic, which enables higher speeds, faster accelerations, and high performance across the entire work envelope. Compact controls and embedded amplifiers ease installation and reduce workspace requirements. Adept Technology Inc. (Nasdaq:ADEP), www.adept.com

Cleanroom Robots

These high-speed, long-reach cleanroom robots offer increased application flexibility in a compact, space-saving design. The DENSO VM-Series six-axis articulated, Class 100 cleanroom robots feature reaches from 1000 to 1300 mm and standard cycle times of 0.89 to 0.95 sec, along with repeatability from ±0.050 to ±0.070 mm and a payload capacity of 10 kg. The long, slim arms of the VM-Series robots allow them to reach around tooling or peripheral equipment, and into deep, narrow spaces such as plastic injection molds. Maximum allowable moment of inertia is 0.36 kgm² at J4 and J5 and 0.064 kgm² at J6. Both floor- and overhead-mount models are available. The compact robot design features a small footprint and concealed electrical wiring and air lines. They are ANSI and CE compliant. Typical cleanroom applications include assembly, dispensing, inspection, machine tending, material handling, packaging, and test handling.
