New Honeywell foundry to produce 150nm radiation-hardened semiconductors

April 28, 2005 - Honeywell has announced the opening of a new semiconductor foundry in Plymouth, MN, where it says the industry’s first radiation-hardened, 150nm ASICs will be produced. The computer chips are designed for use in military and aerospace systems.

The chip feature size of 150nm allows designers to place nearly four times more transistors on an IC than previous generation technology, significantly increasing data computing volume and speed. Honeywell’s radiation-hardened ICs are produced using SOI technology and can withstand the extreme operating environments of space.

“Honeywell will begin producing the smallest, highest performance radiation-hardened integrated circuits available,” said Ed Wheeler, VP and GM, Honeywell’s Defense & Space Electronic Systems business. “This technology will enable advanced flight control and
navigation systems, satellite data processing, high speed communications, and space based radar equipment.”

The wafer foundry and development of the technology was funded by two DoD organizations: the Defense Threat Reduction Agency and the Defense Production Act Title III Program Office.
