In 1998, two Silicon Valley entrepreneurs, Jack Harris and Brian Tuvey, purchased a niche product line from Hewlett-Packard and formed HARRIS TUVEY, to build, service and market their acquisition.

The specialized products involved are two models of Isolation Voltage and Partial Discharge (PD) test systems for HV opto semiconductor devices.

The PD phenomenon has been plaguing numerous sectors of the electronic industries for many years by damaging equipment and increasing production costs. In the case of opto products, this pervasive invader is caused by impurities and/or voids in the encapsulation material surrounding the device. When high voltages are present across the semiconductor, these impurities act as miniature capacitors, building-up charges, which eventually arc across the insulation surface. Over time this process erodes the encapsulation, ultimately resulting in complete electrical breakdown.

The HARRIS TUVEY HT 9464 Test System is unique in its ability to detect PD with a sensitivity of less than 5 pico-coulombs, which is sufficiently low enough to determine if the tested device is PD contaminated.
