Contract manufacturers making the most of MEMS

10/10/2005

Making MEMS devices was supposedly too idiosyncratic to be easily transferred to foundries, but sales at the major MEMS device contract manufacturers jumped 30% last year, and are on track to see similar 30% growth this year and next, according to Yole Développement. Big contract producers Dalsa Semiconductor and Colibrys/Applied MEMS now each have annual sales >$20 million, although that’s still dwarfed by industry leader Texas Instruments’ $900 million revenues. Strong demand for optical MEMS devices and growing interest from consumer goods manufacturers will drive a healthy increase in the total MEMS device market to some $5.5 billion this year. - P.D.
