Aug. 20, 2004 - Biophan Technologies Inc. is working with NASA Ames Research Center to develop nanoengineered materials for implantable power systems, according to a news release.
The Rochester, N.Y.-based firm's TE-Bio subsidiary and the Moffett Field, Calif.-based research facility's Nanotechnology Center seek to make biothermal power generation systems for implanted medical devices as well as long-life, low-power for future space exploration. NASA hopes to use the technology to develop on-board power for astronaut health monitors.
Biophan also recently announced it holds the worldwide rights for all medical applications of a U.S. patent issued to Nanoset LLC for nanomagnetic particle coating technology. The technology is designed to illuminate devices that are difficult to see during magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Biophan said it could lead to MRI-guided minimally invasive surgeries, such as implanting stents or performing angiograms and biopsy probes.
