USPTO seeks nominees for National Medal of Technology and Innovation

USPTO National Medal of Technology and Innovation

January 24, 2012 -- The Commerce Department's United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) seeks nominees in the US for the 2012 National Medal of Technology and Innovation (NMTI), honoring "this nation's creative geniuses," said Richard Maulsby, the USPTO’s acting chief communication officer and NMTI program coordinator.

The Congressionally authorized medal is presented each year by the President of the United States and is the country’s highest award for technological achievement. The medal rewards innovators that help the US lead in technology. The medal is also meant to inspire future generations of Americans to prepare for and pursue technical careers.

IBM was awarded a 2004 Medal and one in 2000. Semiconductor Research Corporation (SRC) has also received one.

The USPTO is looking to increase the diversity of honorees, after a wide variety of recipients in 2011. Individuals, teams (of up to four individuals), companies, or divisions of companies may win the award for outstanding contributions to America’s economic, environmental and social well-being.

Detailed information about the requirements for submitting a nomination, including a nomination form, can be downloaded at www.uspto.gov/about/nmti/guidelines.jsp. All completed nominations must be submitted to the USPTO by 5PM EST, March 31, 2012.
